Special Programs: Feed Me Fresh, Literacy, Volunteers

Mount Kisco Day Care Center has always been concerned with the link between health and good nutrition. Our Feed Me Fresh Curriculum is an innovative and developmentally appropriate curriculum that emphasizes fresh, local and organic foods. A team consisting of a nutritionist, farmers and the chefs from our own kitchen collaborate with the program staff to create a comprehensive garden-to-table food and nutrition program.

At the heart of the program are the Center’s organic gardens. On the off season the teachers, children and seniors design their gardens and order seeds. The gardens are planted and maintained throughout the growing season, with nutrition and cooking classes centered around the fresh produce from those gardens.

In an effort to model that which we are teaching, the Feed Me Fresh curriculum is supported and reinforced by the Feed Me Fresh Kitchen, our own in-house sustainable food service which serves both the children and seniors fresh, delicious, and healthy meals made from scratch that include ingredients from local farms and our own gardens.

The Feed Me Fresh program is designed to increase the level of appreciation for healthy foods and healthy choices for children at an early age. It is our hope to educate families and inspire them to adopt healthy life styles.

The Center’s Enhanced Literacy and other growth programs build success. The foundation for every important social and learning skill begins with the ability to read. That’s why at the Mount Kisco Day Care Center we focus on Literacy with an enthusiasm and determination that makes it a happy, vital part of every child’s day!

In addition to providing a language-rich environment each day we are proud to foster a love of reading through our community-based literacy program featuring special sessions involving children and their families. Recent programs have taken place at such varied places as a nearby fire department…a local gym…as well as other businesses in the neighborhood. In each case, our children and their parents join together in the kind of celebration of reading that truly sets the stage for a life-long love of books – a vital building block for academic success.

The Center would not function without the dedication and commitment of our Volunteer Initiative. This facility is a truly intergenerational community with volunteers of all ages participating in the classrooms with our children and assisting the administration with office functions. Preteens to the “seasoned citizens” have made a huge impact on our children, our families and our staff. We are so grateful for their time and support.
