Intergenerational Program

The Intergenerational Program provides daily interactions for children of all ages with the senior adults of My Second Home, our neighbors in the building.  My Second Home, an agency of Family Services of Westchester, is an adult day care program--a social, not medical, model of adult day care. Approximately 50 seniors participage in the program. The senior program runs from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Participants are transported to an from the center. (This is not a residential program.)

A coordinator creates programs that bring children and seniors together throughout the day, including music/movement, arts/crafts, cooking, bowling, balloon volley ball, sharing books and stories. When children and seniors are together, they are always "double supervised" (MKDCC staff as well as My Second Home stff are always present). Children and seniors are never left alone.

This past year, we have seen more individual “grandmas and grandpas” spend time with our babies. The toddlers continue to spend quality time with their older friends. Preschool children are learning to understand the difficulties in growing older and accepting each senior adult for the experience they bring. The school age children are learning about the past and what it was like growing up years ago before computers and videos and TV through the various intergenerational photography workshops and theater groups they have participated in throughout the year. We thank all the participants and staff of My Second Home for enriching the lives of our children and families.
